{"id":2560,"date":"2012-02-16T11:06:05","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T16:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cusjc.ca\/ottawainsight\/?p=2560"},"modified":"2012-02-16T12:11:54","modified_gmt":"2012-02-16T17:11:54","slug":"a-business-case-for-pro-ball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cusjc.ca\/ottawainsight\/?p=2560","title":{"rendered":"A business case for pro ball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Matthew Grodinsky says some of his favourite childhood memories came while watching the Ottawa Lynx at Ottawa Baseball Stadium with his parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was really young we had to sit in the upper deck because the stadium was always full,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd we\u2019d always make a day out of it \u2013 go downtown, eat some food, walk around, take in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last professional pitch in Ottawa was thrown in 2007 by the AAA Lynx and the team struggled to fill the stands in its final years.<\/p>\n<p>But now speculation continues to swirl that the city could host a AA team, a third tier level to the MLB, as soon as 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters like city councillor Bob Monette emphasize the economic advantage professional baseball will have to the city and small business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s proven over and over that professional sports work,\u201d says Monette. \u201cThey always bring some economic benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cites the success of the 2012 NHL All-Star game, which pumped close to $30 million into Ottawa restaurants, hotels and shops.<ins datetime=\"2012-02-11T13:19\" cite=\"mailto:Julie%20Ireton\"> <\/ins><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying that this is going to be as big as hockey, but the identity level is going to bring some exposure and generate a buzz around the city,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Monette says a pro team will encourage people to eat at local restaurants and shop at local stores, just like Grodinsky\u2019s family did.<\/p>\n<p>But restaurants and analysts tend to disagree.<\/p>\n<p>Howard Bloom, an analyst with Sports Business News, says sports are not an economic catalyst.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody would have a sane business plan to build a restaurant around a team that plays 50 nights a year,\u201d he says. \u201cYou just can\u2019t operate on that many nights of business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacLaren\u2019s on Elgin manager Barrett Karam says baseball won\u2019t generate any extra revenue for his sports bar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in this city don\u2019t care about baseball, \u201csays Karam. \u201cDon\u2019t expect people to flock to the bars to watch a home or road game \u2013it just doesn\u2019t work that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Karam says bars don\u2019t gain extra revenue during a Senators home game because people are at the stadium instead of at a restaurant table.<\/p>\n<p>The Ottawa Baseball Stadium is on Coventry Road in Overbrook \u2013 a neighbourhood that already lacks a diverse group of restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Overbrook Community Association member and business representative Peter McFarlane says a pro team could make the area more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a higher level team came in it would bring in more people,\u201d he says.<ins datetime=\"2012-02-11T13:21\" cite=\"mailto:Julie%20Ireton\"> <\/ins><\/p>\n<p>However, Jonathan Hatchell, vice president of Royal Oak Pubs, says that he would have to consider a variety of factors before opening a restaurant near the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust opening a restaurant close to a sports arena is not a recipe for guaranteed success,\u201d he says. \u201cThere would be the need for other critical business drivers to be in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hatchell says these \u201cdrivers\u201d include the ability to build a patio, being close to commercial property for lunch business, being near a busy residential area and the proximity to recreational sports properties.<\/p>\n<p>Monette still says baseball can bring business advantages.
