{"id":4219,"date":"2016-04-18T10:55:44","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T15:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cusjc.ca\/ottawainsight\/?p=4219"},"modified":"2016-04-19T13:06:39","modified_gmt":"2016-04-19T18:06:39","slug":"saving-money-is-not-a-myth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.cusjc.ca\/ottawainsight\/?p=4219","title":{"rendered":"Saving money is not a myth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One common theme in personal finance literature is that saving money is not easy.\u00a0 It seems like saving money is like exercise; you don\u2019t always want to do it but it\u2019s extremely rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>While some of my classmates dread the burden of student loans, I rejoice in the fact that after graduating I might never have to deal with tuition woes again.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Sometimes <\/span>I find comfort in this because I\u2019ve been paying more than $20,000 a year for tuition alone as an International student at Carleton University.<\/p>\n<p>I used to use the excuse that I do not make enough money to save, but now I\u2019ve gotten in the habit of saving money and setting short and long-term saving goals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The habit of saving money <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chinazom Chidolue graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting in 2015 and now works for a top accounting firm in Toronto, but she admits that she was never really a money person. In other words she used to spend a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Her advice is simple, \u201cstart small and start now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you make it a habit now it will be easier when you do start making more money,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Chidolue doesn\u2019t have student debt either, but she understands the road to financial independence is a difficult one without the right advice. So she started a blog, <em>Investment Conversations<\/em> to provide a platform for other young people to start taking better care of their finances. \u00a0Through this website, she hopes to inspire young people to demystify personal finance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting savings goals <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to have a purpose,\u201d said Bridget Eastgaard, the brains behind the personal finance blog, <em>Money After Graduation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransferring money into a savings account just to have it isn\u2019t very motivating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago she owed $21, 000 in student loans when she graduated from university and had no savings at that time. She started her blog to keep track of her debt repayment and be accountable.
