{"id":574,"date":"2008-09-29T09:21:00","date_gmt":"2008-09-29T14:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/election08.cusjc.ca\/?p=574"},"modified":"2008-09-30T17:52:18","modified_gmt":"2008-09-30T22:52:18","slug":"butterfly-effect-and-the-liberal-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cusjc.ca\/?p=574","title":{"rendered":"Butterfly effect and the future of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Paul Adams<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;butterfly effect&#8221; refers to a feature of chaos theory in mathematics in which a small event &#8212; like a butterfly flapping its wings\u00a0and creating a miniscule change in the atmosphere &#8212; might reverberate through an entire system &#8212; \u00a0changing the direction of some great storm, for example.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to think of everyday human examples: If I hadn&#8217;t been late for the bus that day, I never would have met my spouse, and we wouldn&#8217;t have had twelve kids, and I wouldn&#8217;t have lost my job when she hit my boss with the butt-end of the shotgun her father gave her, and we wouldn&#8217;t be living in this trailer park. (Part of this story is made up, by the way.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, my colleague at EKOS, Frank Graves<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080928.WPollsters29\/BNStory\/politics\/home\/?pageRequested=2\"><span style=\"#000000;\">\u00a0had this<\/span><span style=\"#000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080928.WPollsters29\/BNStory\/politics\/home\/?pageRequested=2\">intriguing blog<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20080928.WPollsters29\/BNStory\/politics\/home\/?pageRequested=2\">\u00a0in the Globe and Mail\u00a0<\/a>on the weekend, in which he points out that with a single vote change at the Liberals&#8217; last leadership convention, the dynamics on subsequent ballots could have changed, resulting in a leader other than Stephan Dion, with a possibly superior result for the Liberals in this election, and potentially tectonic implications on the long-term prospects of the Liberal Party and of the Canadian party system.<\/p>\n<p>So the whole future history of Canada may come down to one delegate who spent too much time in the hospitality suites.
